attempted murder. police say he randomly shot at three people last november... hitting two... and missing one. polson admits he did it... but his attorney is using an intoxication defense... saying his drug use prevented him from knowing right from wrong. i'm an addict, i use what i can get my hands on mostly, i've done some heroin, coke. the prosecution rested its case yesterday... and the defense is expected to do the same today. a burglary suspect got crafty when trying to evade capture... pella police say two men were taking things from "midtown tire" wednesday night. when confronted... the pair ran back into the business. officers quickly caught jason beaman. but joel followill was not as easy to find... as he was hiding inside a stack of tires. both are facing a long list of charges... including burglary. iowa seniors are being forced to do more with less money...

"dakota access" wants to use eminent domain to build the pipeline through 18 iowa counties. the board will decide next month if the company can do that. this weekend thousands of iowans will run through the streets of des moines...

debate demands... donald trump and ben carson were front and center at the last debate... why they might not even show up to the next one... continuing mission... president obama delays troop withdrawal out of afghanistan... what iowa soldiers who fought in that war say about the shift in strategy... it's friday, october 16th.
6:16 am
6:17 am
first on thirteen... the president says there is more work to be done in afghanistan... and iowa troops say they'll be when called upon... we are the most combat ready we have ever been...we have more than 45% of our forces here in iowa that most since wwii by far president obama says nearly 10 thousand troops will stay in afghanistan longer than planned. his original plan was to bring nearly all of them home by the end of next year... but he says afghan security forces won't be ready to defend their own country. it's a move an altoona war veteran agrees with... basically it shows the taliban if they wait it out long enough once we leave they can come in and take back over and it depletes everything we ever did there. so it's important to maintain a strong presence since september 11th, 2001... the iowa national guard has

thousand troops. five thousand of them went to afghanistan. a white house hopeful is weighing in on the president's decision... carly fiorina spoke with voters in spencer yesterday afternoon. the former hewlett packard c-e-o said president obama's was doomed to fail from the start. however fiorina said she supports his recognition of the reality... the reality is the complete withdrawal of our troops from iraq destabilized that country and he now is recognizing that afghanistan is becoming potentially a haven for isis fiorina is scheduled to make stops in pleasant hill... grinnell... cedar rapids... waterloo... and monticello over the weekend. the two republican frontrunners are threatening to pull out of the next debate. meanwhile... there's also question of who will attend the next democratic debate. andrew spencer reports. at the last republican debate,
6:19 am
ben carson and donald trump were front and center. at the next one, they might not be. together, trump and carson sent a letter to c-n-b-c, saying they will not attend the debate on october 28 -- quote -- "if it is longer than 120 minutes including commercials and does not include opening and closing statements." trump took to twitter to ask why the republican party is being asked to do a longer debate than the democratic candidates. trump and carson command a tremendous amount of support among likely primary voters. ...60-percent of them in nevada, according to the latest c-n-n/o-r-c poll and 54- percent in south carolina. the previous republican debate -- at three hours -- left some candidates visibly exhausted... ...but a two-hour broadcast, including commercials, would limit the actual debate to less than 90 minutes -- leaving little time for each candidate if there are ten or more on stage. post-debate for hillary clinton, the democratic front-runner stopped in texas, picking up the endorsement of housing secretary julian castro -- a rising star in the democratic party. ...but the big question this weekend remains: will the next democratic debate include joe biden? a senior democratic official tells c-n-n -- that's based on indications from his inner circle -- biden will likely decide within the next three days whether to run for president. a top democrat who has spoken to biden this week tells c-n-n that his family is "totally on board" -- but it's not clear what his final decision will be.
6:20 am
the next democratic debate is november 14th at drake university. a special investigation revealed 27 hundred dollars of misspending by the former dunkerton police chief... the audit report showed tim schultz used the city's fuel card to buy gas for his personal vehicle. the purchases were reportedly made in 20-13 and 20-14... while schultz was off duty. schultz stepped down in august of last year... after this issue came to

leaving his foster home. he was found dead by the des moines river back in 2001. tomorrow people will build their own cardboard homes in his memory. it's one of the best times of the year for birdwatchers in iowa... well. ive always like to watch the birds...so i like to go out and watch the birds, if you get out there its quiet. you can hear the wind and the birds. tomorrow iowans can get a front row seat at the "union slough national wildlife refuge." that's just north of algona... near bancroft. officials say they're opening tour road... which runs right through the refuge. they say it will allow people to watch migratory waterfowl passing through. you'll find exotic animals and much more under the big top. iowans can see it all this weekend at wells fargo arena. that's where we find channel 13's josh nguyen... josh... it's been an exciting
